In the only other preseason matchup this year, Indiana Fever lost at the Chicago Sky last Sunday, 81-56. All 13 Fever players who saw the court contributed in the scoring column for Indiana, including eight points in the WNBA debut from center Aliyah Boston. The 6-foot-5 rookie from South Carolina went 4-of-5 from the floor in just under 16 minutes of action in her professional debut. Kelsey Mitchell, who led Indiana in scoring 19 times in 2022, finished with a team-high nine points on 3-of-6 shooting.
Fever forward NaLyssa Smith pulled down a team-high five rebounds to go along with four points as well.
Rookie guard Taylor Mikesell came off the bench and finished with five points on 2-of-4 shooting, while fellow rookies Grace Berger and Victaria Saxton each added four points. Berger also contributed four rebounds in her first WNBA game.
In the win for Chicago on Sunday, which followed a 75-70 loss to the Dallas Wings on May 5, forward Isabelle Harrison led all scorers with 15 points as the Sky ended the night with four starters scoring in double figures. Rebekah Gardner added 13 points and a game-high seven rebounds.
After shooting 4-of-12 from 3-point range in the loss to Dallas, Chicago finished 10-of-16 from beyond the arc on Sunday night back at home against Indiana.
For Dallas, center Teaira McCowan led the Wings with 17 points and also tied a team best with eight rebounds and three blocked shots in the preseason win against Chicago. Wings forward Natasha Howard also scored in double digits with 11 points in her first game in a Dallas uniform, while also tying the team lead with eight rebounds. Wings guard Arike Ogunbowale joined the two in double digits with 10 points of her own.
The No. 3 overall pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft Maddy Siegrist came off the bench and played just under 10 minutes in her WNBA debut. Siegrist was one of six additions to Dallas on WNBA Draft night, including Lou Lopez Senechal from the University of Connecticut with the No. 5 overall selection and Abby Meyers from the University of Maryland with the 11th overall selection. The team selected Iowa State’s Ashley Joens with the 19th overall selection and Paige Robinson from Illinois State with the 31st overall selection.
In a trade with the Washington Mystics, the team also acquired the draft rights to Stephanie Soares from Iowa State, in exchange for a 2024 Second Round Selection and Atlanta’s 2025 First Round Selection (acquired via trade).
Dallas also enters 2023 in a similar situation as Indiana under direction of a first-year head coach. Latricia Trammell was hired by Dallas on November 7, 2022 after spending the previous four seasons with the Los Angeles Sparks. Tasked primarily with overseeing the defense, Trammell was part of a staff that led a top-three defensive net rating for three consecutive years from 2019 to 2021. Over the past four seasons, Los Angeles also saw four players named to the WNBA All-Defensive teams, including the 2020 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year in Candace Parker. Prior to her stint in LA, Trammell spent one season as an assistant coach with the San Antonio Stars in 2017.
