The Fever had to reconstruct their roster in almost unprecedented fashion in August, when they lost three players to season-ending injuries in a 10-day span. Those injuries forced Indiana to bring several new players into the fold, including veteran guard Shey Peddy.

It was a familiar situation for Peddy, who had previously played for Los Angeles on a hardship contract for six games in June. Peddy was productive for the Sparks, starting five games and averaging 5 points, 3 rebounds, and 2.7 assists while shooting 38.5 percent from 3-point range.

Though she was waived on July 2, she stayed ready over the next month and a half and capitalized on the opportunity in Indiana.

Peddy’s first two games with the Fever came during a home-and-home set with Minnesota and she was immediately productive. She tallied 10 points and four assists while going 3-for-4 from 3-point range at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Aug. 22, then followed that up two nights later with 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting (3-of-3 from beyond the arc) in 18 minutes in Minneapolis.

Peddy also reached double figures with 13 points and win at Washington on Sept. 9 and went 11-for-22 from 3-point range over her nine regular season games. Her ability to space the floor was vital to the Fever finishing the season strong and securing the sixth seed in the playoffs, as she got a number of open looks thanks to the gravity drawn by Fever All-Stars Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston.

“She’s a pro,” Fever head coach Stephanie White said of Peddy’s contributions. “She’s been around. She’s experienced. She’s stayed ready. Getting opportunities, especially when you’re on the floor and the way that Kelsey and AB work together, it opens things up. She’s been shot-ready and she’s knocked down some big ones for us.”

In the playoffs, Peddy continued to play a significant role off the bench. Her best three games were the last three games of the WNBA Semifinals against Las Vegas and she scored a playoff-high 13 points in Game 5.

Peddy will turn 37 on Oct. 28, but showed this season she still has the game to contribute at the WNBA level. Her journey is unique, as she didn’t make her WNBA debut until the 2019 season at age 30, seven years after she was drafted. But she has played in 131 regular season and 22 playoff games since that time and has shown no signs of slowing down.
