Julie Allemand Is Climbing The Rookie of the Year Ladder
With a 22-game schedule, most teams have played 10-11 games so far this season. However, it’s never too early to peek in on the Rookie of the Year race and tab some young stars, including the Indiana Fever’s own Julie Allemand.
Drafted by Indiana in 2016 with the 33rd overall pick in the third round, Allemand remained overseas until March of this year when she signed a multi-year contract with the team.
Although she wasn’t expected to start at the point guard this season, Allemand has more than shown that she is up to the task since beginning play at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida
Poised with the ball in her hand, Allemand leads all WNBA rookies with 5.5 assists per game, while also ranking third overall in the league behind Phoenix’s Diana Taurasi (5.8) and Chicago’s Courtney Vandersloot (8.0). Allemand also tied a franchise record with 11 assists against Dallas, before dishing out nine more assists against Atlanta earlier this season.
Beyond her ability to create for others, Allemand has also shown the ability to make it rain from beyond the arc, sinking nearly half of her three-point attempts, with an efficient three-point percentage of 51.4 percent so far this season.
If that’s not enough, she is also making an impact on the defensive end showing the ability to be a tough on-ball defender, with an average of 1.7 steals per game. Not to mention some raw underrated athleticism that has allowed her to add five blocks to her stat column, including an impressive block against Minnesota’s Sylvia Fowles.
When you're 5'9" and you block someone who is 6'6" it's pretty much guaranteed ✋🏼

The 5-9 guard rarely leaves the court, averaging 32.4 minutes a game, just slightly behind Kelsey Mitchell (33.2) for most on the team and fourth overall in the entire league.
While everyone has their opinions on who should be considered for Rookie of the Year, Fever head coach Marianne Stanley made it clear that Allemand’s name should be included in that conversation.
“She’s pretty much done it all, [while] playing heavy minutes. So, for me she needs to be in the conversation for Rookie of the Year, absolutely.” Coach Stanley said in a pre-game press conference with the media.
