CHICAGO – The Chicago Sky held on in the fourth quarter to snap a seven-game losing streak with a 92-76 win against the Indiana Fever.
After trailing by as much as 17 in the first half, Indiana reduced the Chicago lead to 62-58 just before the end of the third quarter in Wednesday’s Commissioner’s Cup matchup, but the Sky closed the quarter on a 7-0 run heading into the quarter break. Indiana was once again able to pull within single digits, but Chicago’s 7-of-17 shooting from the floor and an 8-of-10 clip from the free throw line in the final quarter held off Indiana in the first of three regular season meetings.
Kelsey Mitchell led all scorers with a season-high 24 points on 9-of-18 shooting and going 6-of-10 from beyond the arc. Wednesday was the sixth time in Mitchell’s career she scored at least 18 points in any half of a game. Mitchell has now scored in double figures in eight of 11 games this season.
Tiffany Mitchell also set a new season-high with 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting and a 6-of-6 clip from the free throw line. Indiana as a team was also perfect from the charity stripe going 10-of-10 on the night. Wednesday was the fifth time in her career Mitchell scored at least 20 points in a game. This was also her eighth game this season scoring at least 10 points.
Jantel Lavender played her first game back in Chicago, after signing as a free agent this offseason with the Fever, to finish with a season-high 14 points and seven rebounds.
Jessica Breland continued her positive starting influence with six assists and four blocks. The four blocks in a game are the most by any Fever player this season. Teaira McCowan was the only bench player to score on Wednesday finishing with nine points and seven rebounds. Wednesday was the first game of the season she did not start.
Lindsay Allen dished out one more assist to add to her league-leading assist-to-turnover ratio, which is now 23 assists to only five turnovers this season.
For Chicago, Courtney Vandersloot led the Sky with 17 points and a game-high nine assists. Diamond DeShields scored nine points and finished with five rebounds to go along with five assists, but left the game in the fourth quarter due to an injury and did not return. Candace Parker returned to make her Chicago Sky home debut, but was held to only three points and five rebounds.
