The Indiana Fever will take the floor in Gainbridge Fieldhouse for a 4 p.m. ET tipoff against the Seattle Storm on Sunday. The game marks the beginning of a three-game home stretch for the Fever after playing the first four games on the road after the All-Star break.
On June 22, Kelsey Mitchell’s 25 points helped propel Indiana to an 80-68 win over the Storm in Seattle in the first matchup between the two teams this season. The All-Star also knocked down a season-high seven three-pointers on 11 attempts. Forward NaLyssa Smith, who has been absent the past five games due to injury, contributed a double-double in the win with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Rookie center Aliyah Boston and forward Emma Cannon added near double-doubles, as Boston recorded nine points and 11 rebounds while Cannon added 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Fever defense held the Storm to 29.7 percent (22-of-74) shooting from the floor in their first matchup. Seattle’s leading scorer against Indiana was WNBA All-Star MVP Jewell Loyd, who notched 19 points on the night though held to 5-of-21 shooting from the court. She also added four assists and two steals. Ezi Magbegor contributed 18 points and six rebounds, while Ivana Dojkić added 11 points and a game-high six assists.
Indiana’s two All-Stars, Mitchell and Boston, have continued to lead the Fever through the first 24 games so far this season. Averaging 14.4 points and 7.8 rebounds per contest entering Sunday’s matchup, Boston still leads the WNBA in field goal percentage shooting 59.1 percent (136-of-230) from the court while also leading all rookies in scoring average, rebounds, blocked shots (1.3 bpg) and minutes played (30.4 mpg). Mitchell is shooting 36.0 percent (54-of-150) from beyond the arc this season and still ranks in the WNBA top 20 for scoring average (16.3 ppg).
The Fever have seen an increased presence from Victoria Vivians, who has started each of the last five minutes, Emma Cannon and Grace Berger, who have been averaging 10.4, 9.2 and 7.6 points respectively through Indiana’s five most recent matchups. In Indiana’s last matchup at Los Angeles, Berger recorded 11 points, her second-highest offensive output this season, on 5-of-7 shooting from the court.
For Seattle, they are led by Loyd, who enters the matchup averaging 24.2 points and 4.6 rebounds per contest. Magbegor, the Storm’s second All-Star this season, follows behind with an average of 13.9 points per game, while also averaging a team-leading 8.3 rebounds and 1.9 blocked shots per game.
Seattle enters Sunday’s matchup after ending a franchise record 10-game losing streak with an 83-74 win against the Chicago Sky on Friday night. The Storm were led by Magbegor’s 17 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Gabby Williams also netted 17 points, Loyd added 15 points and Sami Whitcomb recorded her first career double-double with 12 points and career best 10 rebounds.
