GAME PREVIEW:

The Indiana Fever will tip off their highly anticipated 2025 season on Saturday afternoon at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, when they host the Chicago Sky in a nationally televised matchup for the Season Opener presented by State Farm.

The Fever returned to the playoffs for the first time since 2016 last season behind a trio of All-Stars in Kelsey Mitchell, 2023 WNBA Rookie of the Year Aliyah Boston, and 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year Caitlin Clark. Indiana has revamped the roster around that young core over the offseason, bringing in a number of veteran players with championship experience as the Fever look to take another leap this season.

Those additions include six-time All-Star DeWanna Bonner and 2019 WNBA Defensive Player of the Year Natasha Howard, both of whom will slot into the starting lineup. Bonner is poised to pass Tina Thompson for third place on the WNBA’s all-time scoring list and needs just seven points in her Fever debut on Saturday to reach that milestone. Howard is now back with the Fever, who originally drafted her out of Florida State in 2014.

The Fever also bolstered their bench by acquiring veterans Sydney Colson, Sophie Cunningham, and Brianna Turner, all of whom have extensive postseason experience. Howard has won three WNBA titles, Bonner and Colson have each won two, while Cunningham and Turner both reached the WNBA Finals in 2021 with Phoenix.

The Fever also have a new but familiar face on the sidelines as Stephanie White returns to Indiana for her second stint as Fever head coach. White was on the inaugural Fever roster in 2000, served as an assistant on Indiana’s 2012 WNBA championship team, and was head coach of the Fever from 2015-16, leading Indiana to the WNBA Finals in her first year. She was head coach of the Connecticut Sun the past two seasons and was named WNBA Coach of the Year in 2023.

The Sky also have a new head coach in Tyler Marsh, who was an assistant for the Las Vegas Aces from 2022-24. Prior to joining the Aces, Marsh spent two seasons in Indiana on staff with the Pacers in the NBA.

Chicago is led by second-year forward Angel Reese. Reese, the seventh overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft out of LSU, was runner-up to Clark in Rookie of the Year voting last season. The 6-3 forward averaged 13.6 points and led the WNBA in rebounding, pulling down 13.1 boards per game (5.1 per game on the offensive glass).
