Fever's Natalie Achonwa Helps Local Kids Get Fit
On Wednesday, May 20, 2015, Indiana Fever rookie Natalie Achonwa traveled to the Indianapolis Fitness Farm with Freddy Fever to tip off the Fever season while participating in the IPS Field Day. Several organizations were present including most of the professional sports teams and organizations in Indianapolis. They all went there with one goal: to help IPS students understand the importance of fitness, exercise and healthy eating practices.
Freddy Fever and Fever staff tipped off the event by helping kids go through stations of stretching and agility, strength and basketball relay races. The kids were reminded in each station of the importance of each one to stay fit and healthy. Freddy Fever helped at each station to encourage the kids to participate and get excited about the program.
When Achonwa arrived, she started by talking about stretching exercises and emphasized its importance in preventing injury, eating healthy and staying fit. She then asked questions to see what the kids had learned, but most importantly tied it in with some of their desires to be professional athletes someday. Next, Achonwa had given the opportunity to those who had answered questions correctly to play a round of knockout to encourage participation. Although some of the students were not participating in the knockout game, they were still cheering everyone on and it was the highlight for the IPS students.
To conclude the program, Achonwa answered questions about fitness, healthy food choices, basketball and mainly anything else they wanted to know about her. She then offered to take pictures with some of the students before everyone left.
The Get Fever Fit program holds Get Fever Fit clinics throughout the WNBA season promoting healthy living styles and showing that staying fit can be fun.
