INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Fever have selected 6-3 Kansas forward Chelsea Gardner with the 21st pick in the 2015 WNBA Draft presented by State Farm. Gardner was the Indiana’s only draft selection, after trading its first- and third-round picks last month to acquire three-year combo guard Shenise Johnson from San Antonio.

An AP and WBCA honorable mention All-American, Gardner was a two-time All-Big 12 First Team honoree. She led the Jayhawks with 16.8 points per game, while averaging 8.6 rebounds and 2.4 blocks. She amassed 1,516 career points which is 12th in Kansas women’s basketball history. She scored in double digits in 16 of her last 17 games at Kansas and totaled double-digit scoring in all but four games as a senior.

While helping KU to a 15-17 record, Gardner ranked third in the Big 12 in scoring, rebounding and blocks.

A native of DeSoto, Texas, she is the seventh KU player drafted by the WNBA and just the third since 2001. She is the first Kansas player ever drafted by the Fever and hopes to join former WNBA All-Star Tamecka Dixon as the only Kansas players ever to wear a Fever uniform.

Indiana’s lone pick represented the second time in franchise history that the Fever have drafted just one player. In 2008, Khadijah Whittington of NC State was the club’s only selection at No. 26 in the draft. Even as a second-round pick, Whittington played 25 games over two seasons.

WNBA training camps begin Sunday, May 17.
