Dupree Reaches 1,000 Points with Fever
Midway through the second quarter in a win against the Wings on Friday night, Candice Dupree set her feet and drained yet another deep two, just as she had so many times over her career. This particular shot was different, though, as it gave her 1,000 points for her career as a member of the Indiana Fever. The fourteen-year veteran becomes just the 13th player in franchise history to reach that milestone.
“I mean that’s huge,” said Dupree. “I had somebody just send that to me in a text message and I was like, ‘What?!’ so that was news to me. That means my teammates do a good job of finding me and I do an even better job of making shots. It was pretty cool.”
Dupree is certainly no stranger to setting career scoring milestones. The forward ranks 8th all-time on the WNBA scoring charts, having scored more than 6,000 points during her career. She is only the second player in WNBA history to score 1,000 points for three different teams (Phoenix, Chicago, Indiana).
“She seems to impact the game wherever she plays,” said Fever head coach Pokey Chatman. “She’s just so consistent. Sometimes you don’t realize what she’s giving you – it can be the extra pass or calming the young ones down when the game gets really, really tight. We’re just blessed that she’s a part of this organization and continuing her winning ways.”
Consistency is the most accurate word to describe Dupree’s offensive production over the past fourteen years. The veteran has never averaged less than 11 points per game during that time and shows no signs of slowing down.
“I am kind of lost for words with that,” said second year Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell. “I am just like ‘Wow OG’, I call her OG. Without her, at lot of stuff for me would not be possible. She is like a confidence booster for me, she kind took us under her wing last year. I’ve been grateful to be a part of her career, it’s amazing and I am happy for her. All the things that she has accomplished is amazing.”
Dupree will look to continue to lead a young Fever team that is hungry to learn from her career of consistency and scoring mentality that has made her such a legend in the WNBA.
