Indiana Fever rookie center Aliyah Boston and sixth-year guard Kelsey Mitchell will suit up in the 2023 WNBA All-Star Game in Las Vegas on Saturday night. Boston and Mitchell will be the first Fever players to play in an All-Star game since 2019.
For the first and only time this season, Boston and Mitchell will take the floor as competitors. During the All-Star Game Selection Show on July 8, Boston was selected as the No. 5 pick by team captain A’ja Wilson, while Mitchell was chosen as pick No. 17 by captain Breanna Stewart. Team Wilson and Team Stewart are set to take the floor at 8:30 p.m. ET on Saturday night.
“I think for us, it’s about being able to figure out how it’s going to go because you’ve never been a part of it, but additionally being able to still support and love one another throughout the process even though we are on different teams,” Mitchell said about experiencing her first All-Star Game with Boston.
Aliyah Boston – All-Star Starter
On June 25, Boston was rewarded for an historic start to her first season in the WNBA when she became only the eighth rookie in WNBA history to be selected as an All-Star Game starter. Boston also joins Tamika Catchings, Anna DeForge and Katie Douglas as only the fourth Fever player to earn an All-Star starting lineup nod.
“Sometimes, there’s not enough words, or words you can even say because the feeling is just unmatched,” Boston said. “I never thought in my rookie season that I would be an All-Star, let alone an All-Star starter, just because of the amount of talented women I’m surrounded by, but it’s a great feeling.”
Through the first 20 games of her career, Boston is averaging 15.4 points, 8.4 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per contest. She has consistently led all 2023 rookies in scoring average, rebounds, blocked shots and minutes played (31.0 mpg), while also leading the WNBA in field goal percentage at 61.0 percent (122-of-200) from the floor.
Along with the All-Star starter nod, Boston has accumulated multiple other recognitions already this season. The rookie center earned the Rookie of the Month award for both May and June as well as the Eastern Conference Player of the Week title for the week of June 12-18.
During the selection show, Wilson had high praise for her fellow Gamecock.
“I don’t have to get her prepared because you know Dawn Staley has already prepared us for these moments,” Wilson said. “She is going to shine bright under those big lights, and I’m excited.”
Kelsey Mitchell – All-Star Reserve
The well-deserved All-Star nod has been a long time coming for sixth-year guard Mitchell.
“I was shocked. It won’t settle in until once I’m there. I might shed tears once I’m in the uniform, probably. I’m getting that chance to really be a part of something that we’ve always been talking about,” Mitchell said.
Entering the weekend, Mitchell is averaging a team-high 16.7 points, 1.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per contest. Mitchell has recorded six 20-point outings already and has scored in double-figures in 18 of Indiana’s 20 matchups this season.
In addition, Mitchell is the No. 2 leading scorer in franchise history (2,762 points). She also holds sole possession of second place in field goals made (968) and made 3-point field goals (395).
Mitchell also participated in the WNBA STARRY 3-point contest on Friday for the second time after competing in 2018. She ranks fourth in the WNBA in most made three-pointers (48) and nears a top-20 ranking in the league for three-point field goal percentage shooting 37.2 percent from beyond the arc.
