Game Recap: Destanni Henderson Scores Career High as Sparks Hold off Fever

INDIANAPOLIS – Rookie guard Destanni Henderson finished with a career-high 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting as the Fever fell in the regular season home opener to the Los Angeles Sparks, 87-77, on Sunday afternoon at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Through her first two games of her WNBA career, Henderson is now averaging 11.5 points and 4.0 assists per contest. The rookie guard from South Carolina also led the Fever with three made 3-point field goals. As a team, Indiana finished the game shooting 10-of-26 from beyond the arc.

Indiana tied the game three different instances during the second half, including at 64-64 with 6:51 remaining, but a 10-0 run from Los Angeles was too much to overcome in the final moments in the first of three regular season matchups between the Fever and Sparks this season.

Kelsey Mitchell added 15 points to extend her league-leading streak of games scoring at least 10 points to 25. NaLyssa Smith continued her impressive start to the season as well with her second consecutive 13-point game to go along with nine rebounds.

Alanna Smith led all Fever reserves with her first game scoring in double figures since August 28, 2020 while with the Phoenix Mercury. Emily Engstler finished with a new season-best nine points, as well as six rebounds off the bench.

The Fever also outscored the Sparks in transition points, 22-6.

For the Sparks, a veteran inside presence paved the way to victory as LA outscored Indiana 58-30 in points in the paint on Sunday. Liz Cambage finished with a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds for her first 20/10 game in a Sparks uniform and 20th in her career. Brittney Sykes finished with 17 points and five steals, while Chennedy Carter added 12 points off the bench.
