When the Fever upset Los Angeles on the road on July 16, Indiana joined the Connecticut Sun as the only clubs to defeat both WNBA finalists from 2016 and 2017.
Candice Dupree and Cappie Pondexter each scored 16 points to help last-place Indiana to an upset win over the Sparks, 78-76. Waived by the Sparks June 28 and signed by Indiana July 1, Pondexter added five assists to help Indiana snap a five-game losing streak. Indiana also got 15 points from Natalie Achonwa and led by 12 points after three quarters, holding on for a breathtaking win as Candace Parker’s putback fell off the rim at the final buzzer.
At Minnesota on July 3, Indiana captured a 71-59 road win at Target Center behind 17 points and nine rebounds from Natalie Achonwa. Until the game’s final bucket, the Fever led consistently by as many as 11 points while the Lynx led by only a deuce, once, in front of a stunned crowd of 8,632 that saw the upstart Fever lead virtually wire-to-wire.
It was Indiana’s first road win of the season and the club’s first regular season road win over the Lynx since 2011.
