Overview: Kamiah Smalls endured one of the most remarkable journeys by a player during the abbreviated 2020 regular season. The rookie from James Madison was drafted by the Indiana Fever in the third round on April 17, which is also Smalls’ birthday. After being released on May 19, Smalls’ rookie season was now uncertain. A second chance came after it was announced Erica Wheeler would not join the Fever to finish the 2020 regular season. With a roster spot open, Smalls signed a contract with the Fever and immediately joined the team in Bradenton. In seven games to finish the season, the rookie averaged 3.9 points, 2.0 assists, 1.1 rebounds and 14.2 minutes per game.
Notable Performances:
August 31: In her season debut against the Chicago Sky, Smalls poured in 13 points on 4-for-4 shooting, to go along with four rebounds and two assists. Smalls became the fourth player in Fever history to score at least 13 points in her debut game with the team.
September 3: Smalls knocked down her first 3-point shot against the Phoenix Mercury. She tied a WNBA rookie record for the most 3-point shots made without a miss to start a career with Lindsey Yamasaki, which was set in 2002. Smalls went 1-for-2 from beyond the arc to end her perfect shooting clip at 5-for-5 to start her career.
September 12: Smalls closed out the regular season playing a season-best 21:50 off the bench to finish with a career-high four assists, to go along with three points.
