Storylines & Promotions

The Indiana Fever meets the Washington Mystics twice in three days this weekend, beginning with a Friday night contest at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The teams clash again Sunday afternoon in Washington.

Fridays contest is the second of four straight Indiana games against two East teams immediately ahead of the Fever in the East standings. The Fever (5-8) downed fourth-place New York (6-9) last Saturday. Indiana meets third-place Washington (8-7) both Friday and Sunday before then hosting the Liberty next Tuesday.

Fridays game begins a stretch of four games in seven days prior to WNBA All-Star activities. Indiana plays every other day between now and then: Friday vs. Washington (19th); Sunday at Washington (21st); Tuesday vs. New York (23rd); Thursday at Tulsa (25th). The WNBA All-Star Game is slated for Saturday, July 27 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. (3:30 p.m., ABC-TV).

A Fever win against Washington would be Indianas fifth in six games. A win could pull Indiana past New York and within a game of third place in the East standings. A win not only represents Indianas second win this season against an Eastern Conference opponent, it would mark the Fevers first win against a team with a winning record. A loss would send Indiana to its second straight defeat by Washington and its ninth loss in 14 games.

Three weeks ago, Indiana had slipped to 1-7 with a rash of injuries. It was the worst 8-game start in franchise history. Indiana got healthy though, during a four-game homestand in which beat Tulsa, Seattle and Connecticut in succession. Following a loss to Minnesota, Indiana routed New York and currently finds itself with the chance to climb as high as third place in the East before teams break for the All-Star Game.

With double-digit scoring in 13 straight games, Zellous became the fourth player on the Fever roster (Catchings, Douglas, Davenport) to eclipse 1,000 points in her career. She enters the Washington game with 1,206 points in her fifth pro season. Briann January (960) and Erin Phillips (946) are each within 100 points of reaching 1,000 later this season.

Already the WNBAs all-time leader in steals (882) and free throws (1,619), Tamika Catchings needs just 18 steals to become the first player to reach 900 in a career. She became the first player to 1,600 free throws in a win over Tulsa, 6/28.

Catchings ranks fifth among the WNBAs all-time scoring leaders (5,954). She needs 46 points to become the sixth player in league history to amass 6,000. She needs 54 points to pass Lauren Jackson as the No. 4 scorer in league history.

Last Games

Fever vs. Liberty: After a back-and-forth first half, the Fever blew the game open in the third quarter, outscoring the Liberty 31-6 en route to the 74-53 victory on July 13. The win was the fourth in the past five games for the Fever, who climbed within a half-game of New York for fourth place in the Eastern Conference. Indiana, which dropped seven of its first eight games, forced New York into 22 turnovers and only had seven. Larkins led a balanced offense, scoring a season-high 15 points. Shavonte Zellous added 13 and Erin Phillips had 12 for the Fever. Phillips was playing her second game since missing the first 11 while recovering from a torn right meniscus. Plenette Pierson scored 12 points to lead the Liberty, who couldn't get within 20 in the fourth quarter.

Mystics vs. Stars: Crystal Langhorne had 13 points and nine rebounds, and the Mystics held San Antonio without a point for more than nine minutes in the second half to complete a two-game sweep of the Silver Stars with an 86-64 victory on July 16. Washington, a winner of four of five games since dropping five straight in June, held San Antonio scoreless for a 9-minute, 26-second span of the second half. The Silver Stars missed 14 straight shots in that stretch. The teams combined to make their first eight attempts from the field and both shot at least 59 percent from the field in the first quarter. Washington led 28-22 after the opening period and by as many as 11 during the sloppier second quarter. Nine of the 10 Mystics that played during the first half scored, including Langhorne, who had seven points and seven rebounds.

Series

Indiana leads the regular-season series with Washington, 33-16, following a 64-60 loss at Washington on June 16. The Fever has won eight of the past 10 meetings, and 9 of 12. In Indy, the Fever is 18-6 with five straight wins the past two seasons. Indiana has dominated the series since 2006, winning the season series in every year but 2010. Since 2006, Indiana is 21-7 against the Mystics overall, 11-3 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. In 2009, Indiana dispatched the Mystics 2-0 in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
